Episode 5

The real Italian contemporary music

This content, it is translated in English because it is of worldwide relevance. Thank you.
As you know, among other things invented by the Italians, there is also music. However Italians invented music long ago and now have gone ahead, even if foreigners think that all Italians – the younger ones too – are still there listening to quadrille (la Quadriglia), Mina, Baglioni and Inoki.

Mistaken! The real contemporary Italian music is something else, today’s Italian music scene is a mix, still evolving, filled with exotic influences.
Dear foreign citizen or misinformed Italian citizen who want to deepen the knowledge of real Italian music, read very carefully which are the artists who represent the real contemporary Italian music. For every artist I chose the most representative song.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee

Surely the duo of the moment in Italy, their sound perfectly reflects the current Italian musical culture. Even if they are famous around the world in no other country like Italy they have become part of the national DNA.

Daddy Yankee alone

Daddy Yankee even without Luis Fonsi is one of the pillars of the real contemporary Italian music, indeed probably he is more a pillar than Luis Fonsi (no offense to Luis Fonsi ). Daddy Yankee looks very young but the truth is 40 years, probably he has a very healthy diet.

More representative song

Enrique Iglesias

Enrique Iglesias’ father was one of the most beloved musicians in Italy and has passed this legacy to his son who now is a cornerstone of true Italian music. Hard to find an Italian person who don’t know by heart the rhythm of the chorus at least of one song by Enrique Iglesias.

J Balvin

Great friend of Gianluca Vacchi (most famous Italian of 2017 and international fashion icon) J Balvin seems Italian but he is not Italian (that’s crazy). However, his music is 100% Italian and is now in loop on all radio stations and in the best compilation of every service station (Autogrill) all around Italy.

Pitbull

Pitbull is for many music experts the modern heir of the Italian songwriters (cantautori): in his lyrics he tackles modern issues and therefore he has the merit of having updated the most important musical traditions of Italy, which unfortunately was dying (i cantautori avevano abbastanza asciugato).

More representative song

Nicky Jam

Nicky Jam with Italian star Vin Diesel.

Nicky Jam was the protagonist of the soundtrack of the last two summers in Italy. But it was not the protagonist (he had a minor role) in the film xXx: The Return of Xander Cage starring Vin Diesel. Nicky plays Lazarus, did you know?

More representative song

Don Omar

Don Omar with Italian star Vin Diesel and Lenny Kravitz.

Already from the name (Don is a very important honorific in Italy, just think about Don Pietro Savastano) you understand that Don Omar is a prominent representative of the real contemporary Italian music. Even Don Omar (as Nicky Jam) starred with Vin Diesel and they have become good friends.

More representative song

Wisin

Wisin is Yandel’s friend. Wisin & Yandel went to school together. Wisin & Yandel are making the real Italian music together. The girls really enjoy dancing to the music of Wisin. Wisin looks a bit like Pitbull.

More representative song

Gente De Zona

Gente De Zona is the Roman dialect to say ‘local people’, this is already enough to understand the link between this group and Italy. Their lyrics are very musical and easy to memorize, this fact contributes to their success in Italy.

More representative song

Jake El Furioso

Great exponent of Italian music but only recently he has plead the cause of the real Italian contemporary music (even if he has always had it in the bottom of his heart). To do this step Jake has started adding an S at the end of every word in his songs to make them more catchy.

More representative song

These are the real artists of contemporary Italian music. Any other artist that you know is not a real contemporary Italian musician. If you want to come on holiday in Italy you should listen to all these songs that I put. Seriously, if you do not you may be marginalized.
The UNOTRE’s guide to Italy will continue in the next episode! You’ll soon discover the truth about so many other things we do in this wonderful country.
